What is FRRO Registration?
The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is the primary government authority responsible for registering foreign nationals in India and managing their compliance with Indian immigration laws. Who Must Register with FRRO?
Not every foreign visitor to India needs FRRO registration, but the requirement applies broadly. You must register if:
Mandatory Registration
- You are on an Employment Visa (regardless of duration of stay)
- You are on a Student Visa and your stay will exceed 180 days
- You are on a Research Visa and your stay will exceed 180 days
- You are on a Medical Visa and your stay will exceed 180 days
- You are on an X Visa (Dependent Visa) and your stay will exceed 180 days
- You are a Pakistani national — regardless of visa type or duration of stay
- You are on any visa specifically endorsed "Registration Required"
Conditional Registration (Stay >180 Days)
- Foreign nationals on Business Visas staying beyond 180 days
- Any foreign national on a long-stay visa whose cumulative stay in India exceeds 180 days in a given year
The 14-Day Registration Deadline
One of the most important facts about FRRO registration is the 14-day deadline. Foreign nationals who are required to register must do so within 14 days of their arrival in India.
This is not a guideline — it is a legal requirement. Failing to register within 14 days can result in:

The Online e-FRRO Portal
FRRO registration is now handled almost entirely online through the official e-FRRO portal at indianfrro.gov.in. Through it, foreign nationals can:

Documents Required for FRRO Registration
Prepare the following documents before initiating your registration:
Core Documents
- Original Passport with valid Indian visa and arrival stamp
- Copy of Visa and Arrival Stamp
- Recent Passport-Size Photographs (as specified by the FRRO)

Address Proof in India

Step-by-Step FRRO Registration Process
Step 1: Create an Account on the FRRO Portal
Visit foreignersportals.gov.in and create an account using your email address. This portal will be your primary interface with FRRO for all immigration matters during your stay.
Step 2: Complete the Online Application
Fill in the registration application form with:
- Personal details (name, DOB, nationality, passport details)
- Visa details
- India residential address
- Employment or purpose of stay details
- Emergency contact information
Step 3: Upload Required Documents
Upload scanned copies of all required documents through the portal. Ensure documents are clear, properly oriented, and within the specified file size limits.
Step 4: Schedule Your Appointment
Based on your application, the portal will indicate whether you need an in-person appointment at the FRRO/FRO office. Schedule the appointment at your nearest office.
Step 5: Attend the Appointment (If Required)
Bring your original documents to the appointment. The FRRO officer may take biometrics (photograph and fingerprints) and verify your documents. Be prepared to answer questions about your stay and activities in India.
Step 6: Receive Your Residential Permit

Understanding Your Residential Permit
Your Residential Permit is a critical document. It contains:
- Name and passport details of the registered foreign national
- Type of visa held
- Period of authorization — the validity of your permit (co-terminus with visa validity typically)
- Place of registration and authorized address
- Conditions (any restrictions on your activities)
Keep your Residential Permit safe at all times. You may be required to produce it at any time during your stay.
Renewing Your FRRO Registration
FRRO registration must be renewed when:
- Your Residential Permit expires (which happens when your visa expires)
- You get a visa extension
- You change your residential address
- You change your employer (for Employment Visa holders)
Renewal is done through the same online portal. Start the renewal process well before your current permit expires.
Changing Your Address
If you move to a new address within the same city or FRRO jurisdiction, you must update your FRRO registration. If you move to a different city with a different FRRO, you must re-register at the new jurisdiction. Notify the FRRO of any change of address within the specified timeframe (usually 14 days).
Exit Permits
An exit permit from the FRRO may be required if:
- Your visa has expired and you need to depart India
- There are any compliance issues with your registration
- You are leaving India permanently
If your visa is still valid, you generally do not need a separate exit permit. However, always confirm your exit requirements with the FRRO or a qualified immigration consultant before your departure date to avoid being held at the airport.
Frequently Asked Questions
I registered with FRRO last year. Do I need to re-register?
If your Residential Permit has expired (usually when your visa expired), and you have renewed your visa, you need to update your FRRO registration. The RP must be in line with your current visa validity.
My company says they will do the FRRO registration. Is that correct?
In many cases, employers do assist their foreign national employees with FRRO registration. However, the foreign national is personally responsible for ensuring registration happens on time and is correctly done. Don't assume — verify with your HR or consult our team.
Can I do everything online or do I need to visit the FRRO office?
