How long is an Indian Business Visa valid?
Business Visas for India are typically issued with validity ranging from 6 months to 5 years, with multiple-entry options. The actual stay per visit is usually limited to 180 days. Validity depends on your nationality and the discretion of the consulate.
Can I work in India on a Business Visa?
No. A Business Visa does not permit employment or earning income in India. It only allows business-related activities like meetings, conferences, and exploring investment opportunities. For employment, an Employment Visa is required.
Can I apply for a Business e-Visa for India?
Yes, many nationalities are eligible for an Indian Business e-Visa, which can be applied for online. The e-Business Visa allows up to two visits per year with a maximum stay of 180 days per visit. However, for long-term or high-value business activities, a regular Business Visa may be more appropriate.
What activities are permitted on a Business Visa?
Permitted activities include attending business meetings, conferences, trade fairs, exhibitions, establishing business contacts, exploring investment opportunities, conducting audits, attending board meetings, and participating in technical training (as a trainer or attendee, not as an employee).
How long does the Business Visa application process take?

Do I need an invitation letter for an India Business Visa?
Yes — an invitation letter from the Indian company you are visiting is the anchor document of the application, usually paired with a letter from your own employer. Both must agree on purpose, dates and counterpart details; contradictions are a classic query trigger.
Can I convert a Business Visa into an Employment Visa in India?
In-country conversion is not a standard route. If a business relationship turns into a job, the usual path is a fresh Employment Visa application sponsored by the Indian employer — generally from your home country — meeting the salary threshold and documentation requirements.
Can my spouse or family accompany me on a Business Visa?
Family members don't ride on your Business Visa — they apply for their own appropriate category (typically tourist for short trips, or X (Dependent) visas alongside long-stay categories). Plan their applications in parallel with yours.
Can I receive a salary in India on a Business Visa?
No. Earning a salary from an Indian entity is employment, which a Business Visa does not authorise. Your remuneration should continue to come from your foreign employer; anything else needs the Employment Visa route.
Can I work remotely for my foreign employer while in India on a Business Visa?
Continuing your normal duties for your foreign employer while travelling for the business purpose of your visa is generally uncontroversial. Basing yourself in India long-term to work remotely is a grey area India has no digital-nomad visa for — take advice before treating a Business Visa as a remote-work permit.
Can I stay 180 days continuously on a Business Visa?
Stay-per-visit is commonly capped around 180 days, but staying long-term also triggers other obligations — stays beyond 180 days on qualifying visas require FRRO registration, and a pattern of maximum-length stays invites scrutiny of whether the activity is really employment.
Does time in India on a Business Visa affect my tax residency?
It can. India's tax-residency tests are day-count based (the well-known threshold is 182 days in a financial year, with other supplementary tests), and they operate independently of your visa category. If your India days are adding up, take advice from a tax professional — visa compliance and tax residency are separate problems.
Will I need an Exit Permit when leaving India on a Business Visa?
Not if your visa and stay are valid when you depart — you simply exit. Exit Permits become relevant only if your visa expires, you overstay, or your passport is lost while in India.
