Visa Extension Checker
Can your Indian visa be extended? Pick your visa type to see the general position, the documents you'll need, and the date you should apply by.
We'll tell you whether it can usually be extended, what you'll need, and when to apply.
Verdicts reflect the general position for each category — outcomes are decided case by case by the FRRO and can differ with your nationality and circumstances. Use your duration-of-stay date, not the visa's outer validity. General guidance, not legal advice.
Visa extensions — common questions
Which Indian visas can be extended?
Long-stay categories — Employment, Student, Medical, Research and X (Dependent) visas — are generally extendable through the e-FRRO portal while the underlying purpose continues. Business visa extensions are considered only in exceptional, documented cases. Tourist visas and e-Visas are generally not extendable.
When should I apply for a visa extension?
We recommend applying at least 60 days before your permitted stay ends. Offices get busy, supporting letters take time, and if your stay lapses while you wait you may fall into overstay.
Can I extend an e-Visa or convert it to another visa in India?
Generally no. e-Visas are not extendable and visa conversion within India is not a standard process. For a longer or different-purpose stay, the usual route is to exit India and apply for the appropriate regular visa from abroad.
What if my extension is refused or my visa expires while waiting?
If refused, you generally must depart before your permitted stay ends — or regularise your status through the FRRO if it has already lapsed, which can involve a penalty and an Exit Permit. Read our guides on extension rejections and the Exit Permit process, and seek advice early.
