India Overstay Checker
Am I overstaying? How many days do I have left? Enter the date your permitted stay ends and find out in seconds — with the right next step for your situation.
Use your duration of stay end date — not the visa's outer validity. They're often different.
This tool only compares the date you enter with today — it cannot verify your actual immigration status, and overstay penalties are set by the authorities (the FRRO publishes an official financial-penalty schedule, and the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 governs serious violations). General guidance, not legal advice — confirm your position with the FRRO or a qualified advisor.
Overstay in India — common questions
Which date should I enter — visa expiry or duration of stay?
Your duration-of-stay end date. Most Indian visas carry two dates: the visa's outer validity and the permitted stay per entry. The stay date is usually the one that governs whether you are overstaying, and the two are often different.
What happens if I've already overstayed?
Do not ignore it — in most genuine cases there is a lawful route to depart, usually by regularising your status through the FRRO, which can involve a penalty and an Exit Permit. The FRRO publishes an official financial-penalty schedule, and serious violations are governed by the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. Act quickly and get advice.
Is there a grace period after my Indian visa expires?
Do not rely on one. India does not publish a fixed, automatic grace period — any leniency is at the discretion of the authorities based on your circumstances. Treat your permitted-stay date as a hard deadline.
Can I extend instead of leaving?
It depends on your visa category. Employment, Student, Medical and X visas are generally extendable through the e-FRRO portal; tourist and e-Visas generally are not. Use our Visa Extension Checker to see the position for your category, and always apply before your stay ends.
