Why a Typo Is Not a Small Problem
An India e-Visa is an Electronic Travel Authorisation linked to specific passport data — name, number, nationality, date of birth. There is no sticker, no physical document to inspect. The authorisation is a record, and the record either matches the passport in your hand or it does not.
That is why a misspelling is not cosmetic. At check-in, an airline is checking your travel authorisation against your passport before boarding you toward a country that can refuse you. At the Indian counter, an officer is doing the same. Neither is in a position to decide that a difference is probably fine.
What You Can and Cannot Change
The uncomfortable part: a submitted e-Visa application cannot be edited, and a closed application cannot be reopened. There is no correction field for a granted authorisation carrying a wrong detail.
In practice that leaves one route for a genuine data error: apply again with the correct information, and understand that the earlier fee does not come back — e-Visa fees are non-refundable whatever the outcome. Do that with enough runway before travel that the new application clears the processing window comfortably.
Before you reapply, use the official portal's status and enquiry channels rather than a third-party site offering to "amend" your visa for a fee. The Name-Order Trap
By far the most common error is not a spelling mistake at all. It is given name and surname in the wrong fields.
It happens because passports around the world lay names out differently, and because many travellers type their name the way they say it rather than the way their passport's machine-readable zone records it. The rule that avoids it entirely:
> Copy from the passport's data page exactly — same spelling, same order, same spacing, including every given name shown. Not the way you write it on a form at home.
The same discipline covers the other frequent errors: transposed passport digits, the wrong expiry date, and a date of birth entered in the wrong format.
Check Before You Fly, Not At the Airport
When your authorisation arrives by email, read it against your open passport — not from memory. Check, in this order:
- Surname and given names, character for character
- Passport number, digit for digit
- Date of birth and nationality
- Validity dates against your actual travel dates
- The visa type — that the category matches what you are actually going to do
Do this the day it arrives. A mismatch found six weeks before departure is an inconvenience and a second fee. The same mismatch found at check-in is a cancelled trip.
The Related Case: Your Passport Changed
A different problem with the same symptom: your details were right when you applied, and then your passport was replaced. The authorisation now references a document you no longer hold.
