Why a Lost Passport Requires an Exit Permit
If you lose your passport in India, you lose the physical document that carries your Indian visa. Even if your visa was valid, you cannot board an international flight without travel documents — and because your visa can no longer be verified in the original passport, your departure usually needs to be cleared by the FRRO through an Exit Permit. This is one of the most common non-overstay reasons an Exit Visa is required.
The Practical Sequence
Step 1 — File a police report (FIR)
Report the loss or theft at the nearest police station and obtain a copy of the First Information Report (FIR). Almost every later step depends on this document, so do it first.
Step 2 — Contact your embassy or consulate
Your country's mission issues an emergency travel document or replacement passport. Requirements differ by nationality, so contact them early. Bring the FIR, photographs, and any identity evidence you still have (a photocopy or photo of the lost passport helps enormously).
Step 3 — Apply for the FRRO Exit Permit
With the FIR and your new travel document, apply for the Exit Permit through the e-FRRO portal. The office links your case to your original visa record and, if everything is in order, authorizes your departure. You may be asked to appear in person at one of the FRRO offices.
Step 4 — Depart within the permitted window
Once the Exit Permit is granted, travel within any timeframe specified.
Documents You Will Typically Need

| Emergency travel document / new passport | Your document to travel on |

| Confirmed flight ticket | Shows your departure date |

If Your Visa Had Also Expired
A lost passport is more complex if your visa had already lapsed, because you are dealing with both a documentation issue and an overstay. The steps are similar, but a penalty may apply and the process can take longer. Seek advice before you act.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to leave India after losing my passport?
It depends on how quickly your embassy issues a travel document and how busy your FRRO office is. Start both the embassy and FRRO steps as early as possible, and do not book a tight flight until your Exit Permit is confirmed.
Do I need the original FIR or is a copy enough?
Keep the original safe and carry certified copies. The FRRO and your embassy will both want to see it.
Can you help with the whole process?
Yes. We help coordinate the FIR, embassy, and FRRO Exit Permit steps so nothing falls through the cracks. Start with a free consultation.
