Visa Extension vs Visa Renewal in India: What's the Difference?

Extension and renewal sound interchangeable, but in India they are different processes with different rules — and e-Visas follow neither. Here's which path applies to you.

Two Words, Two Different Processes

People use "extension" and "renewal" interchangeably, but in Indian practice they describe different things:

  • Extension — prolonging your current stay from inside India, through the FRRO / e-FRRO portal, while the original purpose continues.
  • Renewal — obtaining a fresh visa, generally from outside India through an Indian embassy or consulate, once your current visa has run its course.

Which one applies to you determines where you apply, what you need, and whether you must leave the country first.

Can an e-Visa Be Extended?

Generally no. India's e-Visas (e-Tourist, e-Business, and related sub-categories) are designed as fixed-window permits and are generally not extendable and not convertible to other visa types inside India. If your plans have grown beyond an e-Visa's limits, the reliable route is a renewal-style move: exit India and apply for the appropriate regular visa from abroad. Trying to stretch an e-Visa from inside the country usually leads to a refusal — or worse, an overstay.

Which Path Is Right for You?

  • Your purpose continues and your category is extendable → apply for an extension well before your stay ends. Verify your category with the Visa Extension Checker and see our extension service.
  • Your purpose has changed (tourism became work, study became employment) → an extension is the wrong tool. Exit and apply for the correct visa — see Business vs Employment Visa for the classic case.
  • Your visa has already expired → neither process fits cleanly anymore. You are in overstay territory and usually need to regularise via an Exit Permit, then apply fresh from abroad. Read Exit Permit vs Visa Extension.
  • You're on a tourist visa or e-Visa → plan around the granted stay; extensions are generally unavailable. See the tourist visa position.

What Happens If Your Visa Expires Before You Act?

The moment your permitted stay lapses, both doors narrow: a routine extension becomes difficult or unavailable, and a fresh visa cannot be issued while you remain in India unlawfully. The practical sequence becomes: regularise → exit lawfully → re-apply from abroad. Check where you stand today with the Overstay Checker, and don't count on a grace period — India doesn't publish one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I renew my Indian visa without leaving India?

Generally no. A fresh visa is issued by Indian missions abroad. Inside India, the available instrument is an extension — and only for eligible categories.

Can I travel abroad and return while my extension is pending?

Leaving India generally abandons a pending extension application, and re-entry depends on your visa's remaining validity and entries. Take advice before booking travel with an application pending.

My multiple-entry visa is still valid — do I need either process?

If the visa's validity and your per-visit stay both allow it, you can simply exit and re-enter — no extension or renewal needed. Just watch the duration-of-stay rules per visit.
