The Straight Answer
For the large majority of visitors, an Indian tourist visa cannot be extended. Tourist visas and e-Tourist visas are designed for a defined visit, and the expectation is that you leave within your permitted stay. This is different from long-stay categories like employment or student visas, which have established extension routes through the FRRO. If you are on a tourist visa, plan your travel around the stay you were granted — do not assume you can add time later.
Why It Works This Way
The refusal is structural, not bureaucratic obstinacy. A tourist visa is issued against a stated purpose and a defined visit. Extension routes exist for categories built around an ongoing commitment in India — an employment contract, a course of study, a dependant's stay tied to a principal visa holder. There is nothing equivalent to renew on a tourist visa: the purpose ends when the visit ends.
This is also why visa conversion inside India is not the workaround people hope for. Wanting to stay longer is not a change of circumstances; it is the same circumstance, continued.
Your Nationality Changes the Numbers
The single most common planning error is reading another nationality's guide and assuming it applies to you. It often does not:
- US and UK nationals are commonly capped at 180 days in a calendar year, counted across e-Tourist and regular paper tourist visas combined. A five-year visa does not raise that ceiling — it only means you may return during those five years.
- French nationals, by contrast, commonly see e-Tourist stays capped at 90 days per visit, not 180.
- A long visa validity and a long permitted stay are different things. Validity is how long the document is usable; stay is how long any one visit may run.
Check the conditions printed on your own visa and on the nationality guide that applies to you rather than a figure you read somewhere general.
Visa on Arrival Cannot Be Extended Either
If you entered on India's Visa on Arrival — available to Japanese, South Korean and, conditionally, UAE nationals at six designated airports — the position is even firmer. The VoA is issued for up to 60 days and is non-extendable, and non-convertible except in specific cases. There is no mechanism to add time to it. The one conversion the guidelines provide for is to an Entry (X-2) visa, if you marry an Indian national, a Person of Indian Origin or an OCI cardholder while the VoA is still valid.
The Narrow Exceptions
Discretionary relief may exist in genuinely exceptional situations, such as:
- A medical emergency that makes travel unsafe (documented by a hospital)
- Force-majeure disruptions beyond your control
- Specific circumstances the authorities choose to accommodate case by case
Even then, relief is at the discretion of the authorities, not a right. If you believe you have such a case, act immediately and seek advice rather than waiting.
Know Which Date Governs You
Tourist travellers overstay most often by misreading their permitted stay. Your duration of stay — not the outer visa validity — usually controls how long you can remain. What to Do If Your Tourist Stay Is Running Out
- Confirm your exact departure deadline (duration of stay)
- Plan to leave on time — this is almost always the correct answer
- If you have a genuine emergency, gather documentation and seek advice at once

If You Are Already Past Your Date
This is a different problem from the one above, and it is handled differently. Do not keep waiting for a solution to appear.
- Stop counting and confirm the actual position with the overstay checker.
- Approach the FRRO yourself. Coming forward is a materially different posture from being identified at the airport on the way out.

- Do not book a flight around an assumption. Clearance has to be in place first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert my tourist visa to another visa inside India?
Generally no — a Tourist Visa cannot be converted to another category inside India except in specific cases, and wanting to stay longer is not one of them. Two situations are genuinely provided for. If you marry an Indian national, a Person of Indian Origin or an OCI cardholder while your visa is still valid, the FRRO can convert it to an Entry (X-2) visa. I have a one-year tourist visa. Can I stay the whole year?
Not necessarily. Multiple-entry tourist visas often limit each visit to a set number of days. Check your duration of stay, not just the validity.
