Business Visa Extension in India: What Is and Isn't Possible

Extending an Indian Business Visa is more limited than extending an Employment Visa. Here is how business stays work, when an extension may be considered, and the alternatives.

Business Visa Stays Work Differently

An Indian Business Visa lets you visit for business activities without becoming an employee of an Indian company. It is more flexible than a tourist visa but more constrained than an employment visa when it comes to extending your stay per visit. Many business visas are multiple-entry with a capped stay per visit, so the design assumption is that you come and go rather than settle in for a long continuous period. For the fundamentals, see our complete Business Visa guide and the Business Visa service.

When an Extension May Be Considered

Extensions of business stays are handled case by case through the FRRO and are not guaranteed. They are more likely to be considered where:

  • There is a genuine, documented ongoing business need
  • Your activities remain within Business Visa conditions (no employment, no salary from an Indian entity)
  • You are compliant with registration and reporting
  • You apply before your permitted stay ends

If your engagement has effectively become employment — drawing a salary from an Indian company or working as their employee — the correct answer is usually not an extension at all but the right visa. Read Business Visa vs Employment Visa to check which side of the line you are on.

If Your Stay Is Running Out

  1. Confirm your duration of stay using visa expiry vs stay expiry
  2. Decide whether a genuine extension case exists or a different visa is the real answer
  3. Apply early through the e-FRRO portal if extending
  4. If you have already overstayed, see overstay consequences and the Exit Permit process

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep extending a Business Visa to live in India?

No. Business Visas are not a substitute for a long-stay work visa. If your activity has become employment, you need an Employment Visa.

My project got extended by two months. Can I stay?

Possibly, if a genuine business need is documented and you remain within visa conditions — but it is assessed case by case. Apply before your stay lapses and seek advice.

What if I have already overstayed on a Business Visa?

Address it promptly. You may need to regularize your status and obtain an Exit Permit. Start with a consultation.
