Your Address Is Not an Administrative Detail
When you register with the FRRO, you are not simply telling the authorities you exist. You are telling them where you are — and that address does more work than most people realise:
- It determines which FRRO holds jurisdiction over you — not your port of entry, not your employer's head office
- It is the address any verification will be conducted against
- It is what your Residential Permit records
- It is the address your host or landlord has separately reported under Form III
Move without updating it, and every one of those quietly points at a place you no longer live.
Change of Address Is a Real Service, Not a Courtesy
Change of Address is one of the named services on the e-FRRO system — alongside registration, registration extension, visa extension, visa conversion, change of employer or institution, exit permit and duplicate registration certificate. It exists precisely because moving is expected and reportable.
File it through the e-FRRO portal and follow the document checklist the portal shows for your case. In broad terms, expect to evidence the new address the way you evidenced the old one — a lease in your name, or a host declaration supported by the host's own identity and address proof. The Move That Changes More Than Your Address
Most moves are within one FRRO's territory. Some are not — and those are a different matter, because your jurisdiction moves with you.
The clearest example: since the November 2025 realignment, all of Haryana, including Gurugram, sits with FRRO Chandigarh rather than Delhi. A foreign national who moves from South Delhi to Gurugram has not merely changed address; they have changed the office responsible for their file. The same applies moving into Rajasthan (now Jaipur), Assam (now Guwahati), or across Kerala's three-way district split.
Before you file, check which office your new address actually falls under using the jurisdiction finder — and expect a cross-jurisdiction move to be handled with more care than a move across town.
Do Not Forget the Other Half
Your filing is one side of the record. The other is your host's: hotels, guesthouses, landlords and individuals accommodating a foreign national report that stay under Form III, generally within 24 hours. When you move, a new host has a new duty — and if your FRRO record still shows the old address while Form III reports show the new one, that inconsistency exists in the system whether or not anyone raises it with you.
When It Actually Bites
Nothing dramatic happens the day you move. The gap surfaces later, and always at a moment when you need something:
- At extension, when your supporting documents show one address and your record shows another
- At exit, if your file is reviewed
- During any verification, where officers attempt to confirm a residence you left months ago

None of these are catastrophic on their own. All of them are cheaper to avoid than to explain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to tell the FRRO if I move within the same city?
Treat it as reportable. Change of Address is a formal e-FRRO service, and your registration and Residential Permit record a specific address that any verification will use. Same-city moves are the easy case — file it and move on.
What if I move to a state under a different FRRO?
Then the office responsible for your file changes with you. Check your new jurisdiction before filing — the November 2025 realignment moved several states, most notably all of Haryana including Gurugram, from Delhi to Chandigarh.
What documents do I need for a change of address?

I moved months ago and never updated it. What now?

No — they are separate duties. Form III is your host's obligation to report your stay; the change of address is your obligation to keep your own registration record current. Both need to happen.
