The One Rule That Governs X Visa Extensions
An X (Dependent) Visa exists because of someone else's visa — a spouse or parent holding a qualifying long-stay visa (most often Employment or Student). Its extension follows the same logic: a dependant's stay extends in line with the principal's valid status. If the principal's visa is extended, the dependants can extend to match; if the principal's status ends, the dependants' basis ends with it.
That single rule explains almost everything about the process — and the mistakes.
What You'll Typically Need
| Document | Notes |
|---|---|
| Principal's passport, visa and extension approval | The foundation — the dependant's file rides on it |
| Relationship documents | Marriage certificate (spouse), birth certificates (children) — attested/apostilled as required |
| Dependant's passport + photographs | Meeting the usual specifications |
| Proof of address | Same household as the principal, typically |
| Prior [FRRO registration](/frro-registration-india) records | For each dependant who was required to register |
| Principal's employer/institution letter | Confirming their continued status |
Full formatting rules are in the FRRO documents checklist.
The Sync Mistakes That Cause Trouble
Extending the principal but forgetting the dependants
The classic error: the employee's extension is approved, everyone relaxes, and a spouse's stay quietly lapses weeks later. File together, or immediately after the principal's approval. A lapsed dependant stay is a real overstay with real consequences — check any doubtful date on the Overstay Checker.
Assuming children's dates match the parents'
Each family member has their own permitted-stay date. List every passport's date separately; don't assume.
Missing a child's registration or documentation changes
Children age into requirements (and out of passports). Keep certificates current and names consistent across documents.
How to Apply
- Confirm the principal's extension first (or file simultaneously) — see the Employment or Student extension guides
- Gather relationship + principal-status documents
- File each dependant's application on the e-FRRO portal, well before the earliest family expiry — the Extension Checker gives you the recommended date
- Track each application separately and note each new permitted stay
When the Basis Changes
If the principal changes employer, finishes the course, or leaves India, the dependants' position changes too — usually requiring fresh visas rather than extensions. And if a dependant wants to work in India, an X Visa can't be extended into that: they need their own Employment Visa, generally applied for from abroad. For the stay-or-go decision after a basis change, see Exit Permit vs Visa Extension.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can dependants extend for longer than the principal?
No — a dependant's extension is granted in line with (never beyond) the principal's valid status.
Do X Visa holders need separate FRRO registration?
Dependants who meet the registration criteria register individually, each getting their own record — one per person, not per family.
Can an X Visa holder study during the extended stay?
Generally yes — X Visa holders can typically study in India. Working, however, requires their own work visa.
