Derivative Means Exactly What It Sounds Like
An X (Dependent) Visa is not a status a family member holds in their own right. It is granted because a principal visa holder has a valid basis to be in India, and it is tied to that basis.
So the uncomfortable implication is simple: when the principal's visa ends, the dependants do not automatically keep theirs — regardless of what expiry date is printed inside their passports. Families discover this at the worst possible time, usually while dealing with a job loss.
The Events That Trigger It

- The principal departing India permanently while family remain
- The principal's visa expiring or an extension being refused
- A change of category by the principal that alters the basis the dependants were granted against
Note what is not on that list: the dependants doing anything at all. Their position changes because of someone else's file.
Your Three Routes
1. The principal re-establishes a basis. A change of employer, or a fresh Employment Visa with a new sponsor, restores the foundation the dependants rest on. Their position then follows the principal's new status — as a linked application, not automatically.
2. The family exits together. Often the cleanest answer, and considerably cleaner if done deliberately rather than after weeks of drift. If any family member's stay has already lapsed, departure may need to be regularised through the Exit Permit process — and it is worth understanding that before booking flights.
3. A dependant establishes an independent basis. A spouse with their own job offer needs their own Employment Visa meeting its own requirements, including the salary threshold — an X Visa does not convert into work rights, as we set out in can you work on an X Visa. Children, School and the Practical Timeline
The part families underestimate is that this is not only a paperwork question. Children's school terms, notice periods on housing, shipping, and the availability of appointments all run on their own clocks, and none of them accelerate because your visa position changed.
Two practical rules:
- Do not let the children's position drift while the adults resolve theirs. Their visas rest on the same basis and lapse the same way.
- Sequence the family as one case. Handling the principal first and the dependants "later" is how a single problem becomes three.
Where Families Go Wrong
- Reading the printed expiry date as permission. The date on the sticker is an outer limit, not a guarantee that the basis behind it survives. This is the same trap as visa validity versus stay validity.
- Assuming a job search protects the family. It does not. Until a new basis exists, there is no basis.
- Waiting for someone to tell them. Nobody sends a notification when a derivative status loses its foundation. The gap is discovered at an extension, an exit, or a school enrolment that asks for documents.
What To Do in the First Week
- Establish exactly when the principal's basis ended or will end — the employment date, not the visa date
- Decide the family's route among the three above, as one decision
- If staying is the plan, start the principal's new basis immediately — dependants cannot move ahead of it
- If leaving is the plan, check whether anyone's stay has already lapsed, and take advice before travel
- Keep the paperwork for everyone — every family member will be asked for it in future applications

My spouse lost their job. Is my X Visa still valid?
Do not rely on the printed expiry. The X Visa rests on your spouse's status, and when the basis for their visa ends, the foundation for yours goes with it. Establish the employment end date and take advice quickly.
Can I stay in India on my X Visa while my spouse looks for work?
There is no independent right to remain once the basis has ended. If a change of employer is realistically available, that is the route that keeps the family in place; if not, plan the departure deliberately rather than drifting.
Can I switch from an X Visa to an Employment Visa if I find a job?
Not as a conversion. Employment requires its own visa, with a sponsoring employer meeting the category's requirements, generally applied for from outside India. Plan for that route rather than assuming an in-country switch.
