Deadline vs Processing Time — Don't Confuse the Two
These are different clocks, and mixing them up causes panic (or worse, complacency):
- The deadline is yours: registration within 14 days of arrival for qualifying stays, extensions before your permitted stay ends. Missing it is a compliance failure regardless of how busy the office is — see what happens when the registration deadline is missed.
- Processing time is the office's: how long your submitted application takes. A pending application submitted on time is a fundamentally different position from an unsubmitted one — including for whether you can work while registration is pending.

The Deficiency-Notice Detour
The single most common way a "two-week" case becomes a six-week case is a deficiency notice — the office pausing your application and asking for corrected or additional documents. The clock effectively restarts on your response: answer within days (not weeks), fix exactly what was flagged, and don't introduce new inconsistencies in the re-upload. Somewhat — workloads differ across the network, and the network itself changed in November 2025 (Guwahati became the 15th FRRO; Jaipur and Chandigarh were upgraded, redistributing several states' caseloads).
