India Visa Essentials for Canadian Citizens
- •Important: previously-issued 10-year regular (paper) tourist visas held by Canadian nationals are currently not valid for travel to India. If and when they are reinstated, it will be notified officially. Check your visa's current status with an Indian mission before you travel, and use the e-Visa where eligible.
- •The 180-day-per-calendar-year cap applies across e-Tourist and regular tourist visas combined.
Which India visa do you need?
The requirements and process for each category are the same for all foreign nationals. For tourism, Canadian travellers use the official e-Visa portal. For everything below, we handle the paperwork end to end:
Meetings, conferences, investment exploration.
Paid work with an Indian employer.
Spouses and children of visa holders.
Persons of Indian origin and spouses.
Treatment at recognised Indian hospitals.
Mandatory for stays beyond 180 days.
Extend an eligible long-stay visa.
Leave India after an overstay or expiry.
For tourism, most Canadian citizens use the official India e-Visa portal (given the caveat above on older paper visas). For business, employment, family (X), OCI, medical, or FRRO/compliance matters, apply through the appropriate route — we handle it end to end.
India Visa FAQs for Canadian Citizens
Is my old 10-year India tourist visa still valid as a Canadian?
Possibly not. Previously-issued 10-year paper tourist visas held by Canadian nationals are currently not valid for travel to India until officially reinstated. Verify your specific visa's status with an Indian mission before booking travel, and apply for an e-Visa if eligible.
Do Canadian citizens need a visa for India?
Yes. Canadians are not eligible for visa-free entry. Most short visits use the e-Tourist Visa applied for online; other purposes require the appropriate regular visa.
Can Canadians of Indian origin skip the visa?
Persons of Indian origin (and eligible spouses) may qualify for an OCI card, which allows visa-free entry for life. See our OCI services to check eligibility.
