India Visa Essentials for Italian Citizens
- •Italian citizens have no Visa-on-Arrival option — the e-Visa (applied for online, granted as an ETA) is the standard route for short visits, and it must be secured before departure.
- •Regular visa applications in Italy run through the Embassy of India in Rome and the Consulate General in Milan, with intake through their outsourced centre — check the mission's site for your region's current channel.
- •The 180-day-per-calendar-year cap applies across e-Tourist and regular tourist visas combined.
- •Italian companies expanding into India should plan visas alongside entity setup — Business Visas for exploration, Employment Visas (with the salary threshold) once staff take up roles. Our foreign company advisory covers the sequence.
Which India visa do you need?
The requirements and process for each category are the same for all foreign nationals. For tourism, Italian travellers use the official e-Visa portal. For everything below, we handle the paperwork end to end:
Meetings, conferences, investment exploration.
Paid work with an Indian employer.
Spouses and children of visa holders.
Persons of Indian origin and spouses.
Treatment at recognised Indian hospitals.
Mandatory for stays beyond 180 days.
Extend an eligible long-stay visa.
Leave India after an overstay or expiry.
For tourism and business visits, most Italian citizens use the official India e-Visa portal. For employment, family (X), medical, OCI, or any FRRO/compliance matter, apply through the Embassy of India in Rome or the Consulate General in Milan — our team manages the process end to end.
India Visa FAQs for Italian Citizens
Do Italian citizens need a visa for India?
Yes — there is no visa-free entry or Visa on Arrival for Italian citizens. Short visits typically use the e-Visa applied for online before travel; employment and other long-stay purposes require the appropriate regular visa from the Embassy in Rome or Consulate in Milan.
How early should Italians apply for an India e-Visa?
Apply at least four days before arrival — that's the portal's minimum processing buffer. For regular visas through the missions, allow substantially longer, especially around holiday seasons.
Can Italian citizens work in India on an e-Visa?
No. Paid employment requires an Employment Visa obtained before travel with the sponsoring employer's documents — the same rule as every nationality. Stays over 180 days on qualifying categories also trigger FRRO registration within 14 days of arrival.
