Why Visa Extensions Get Rejected in India (and How to Avoid It)

Visa extension applications in India fail for a handful of recurring reasons — most of them preventable. Here are the patterns behind rejections, and how to file an application that gets approved.

Extensions Are Discretionary — Which Is Why Rejections Happen

A visa extension in India is not an entitlement. The FRRO assesses each application against your visa category's rules, your compliance record, and the strength of your stated purpose — and refuses the ones that don't hold up. The encouraging part: most rejections trace back to a short list of preventable causes. If you understand them before you file through the e-FRRO portal, your odds improve dramatically.

The Most Common Rejection Reasons

1. The category was never extendable

The single most common failure: applying to extend a tourist visa or an e-Visa, which are generally not extendable, or a business visa without the exceptional circumstances that category requires. Know your category's position first — see extension vs renewal for what to do instead.

2. The purpose no longer matches the visa

Extensions are granted to continue the original purpose. If your situation has changed — the job ended, the course finished, the treatment concluded — an extension is usually the wrong instrument, and the application signals it.

3. Weak or missing supporting letters

The employer letter, institution bonafide certificate, or hospital certificate is the heart of the application. Letters that are unsigned, undated, vague about duration, or inconsistent with your other documents sink otherwise good cases.

4. Filing too late

An application lodged days before expiry leaves no room for queries — and if your stay lapses while it's pending, you now have an overstay problem on top of an extension problem. We recommend applying at least 60 days out; our checker computes the date for you.

5. A compliance record with gaps

Missed FRRO registration, an unreported address change, or a previous overstay all weigh against you. The FRRO sees your history when it assesses your application.

6. Document-quality failures

Blurry scans, mismatched name spellings, and inconsistent dates — the same issues that plague FRRO applications generally — cause queries, delays, and refusals.

What to Do If Your Extension Is Refused

  1. Read the reason — refusals usually indicate what fell short.
  2. Check your dates immediately — how long remains on your permitted stay? Use the Overstay Checker.
  3. If time remains, take advice on whether a corrected re-application is realistic or whether a planned exit and fresh application from abroad is safer.
  4. If your stay has already lapsed, shift focus to regularising your status — usually via an Exit Permit. See Exit Permit vs Visa Extension for how the two paths differ.
  5. Don't simply re-file the same application — an unchanged application usually earns an unchanged answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a rejected extension mean I'm banned from India?

No. A refusal is not a ban — but staying past your permitted stay after a refusal creates an overstay, which does have consequences. Depart on time or regularise promptly.

Can I appeal a visa extension refusal?

There is no standard formal appeal route; the practical options are a corrected re-application (where justified) or exiting and applying afresh from abroad. Professional advice helps you pick the right one.

Can I travel out of India while my extension is pending?

Leaving India with an extension pending generally abandons the application, and re-entry depends on your visa's validity and entries. If you must travel, take advice before booking.
