How to apply — start online, not at the office
Since 2018, FRRO services run through the official e-FRRO portal. You visit the Kochi office only if the portal or the office asks you to appear. If your visa has already expired, the service to look for is an exit permit through FRRO Kochi, not a registration or an extension.

Create an account on the official e-FRRO portal (indianfrro.gov.in) and select the service you need — registration, extension, exit permit, or another service.

Upload your documents (passport, visa, photograph, proof of address in India, and purpose-specific documents) and submit the application online.

Track the application status on the portal. Most cases complete without any office visit.

Attend FRRO Kochi in person only if instructed — bring originals of everything you uploaded.
Registration deadlines: foreign nationals on visas valid for more than 180 days must register within 14 days of arrival. Since June 2026, those on visas of 180 days or less who intend to extend must register before completing 180 days of stay. OCI cardholders and children under 12 are exempt. Until September 2026, BoI's jurisdiction page listed Lakshadweep under FRRO Kochi. Its update of 16 September 2026 no longer names Lakshadweep under any office. Confirm before relying on Kochi: file on the e-FRRO portal, which routes the application, or ask FRRO Kochi's help desk.
Which Kerala districts does FRRO Kochi cover?
Six: Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, Palakkad and Thrissur. North Kerala is under FRRO Kozhikode and the south under FRRO Thiruvananthapuram.
I am staying in Munnar or Thekkady — which office is mine?
Both are in Idukki district, which falls under FRRO Kochi.
Do I need to visit the FRRO Kochi office in person?
Usually not. Since 2018, applications are made online through the official e-FRRO portal, and you attend the office only if specifically asked to — for an interview, verification, or an exceptional case.
